BICI Bike Racks

So back a couple of months ago I wrote an article for the New York Observer about New York’s changing cycling culture. For it, I interviewed a gentleman named Mark Simpson who is one half of the consulting firm BICI. His firm works to help municipalities, property owners, businesses, and college campuses plan infrastructure changes to better accommodate cycling.

I recently got an email from Mark about some design work BICI has done:

This past July, we entered a national competition held in Fayetteville, Arkansas to design and fabricate two artistic bike rack sculptures. We submitted five designs, two of which were selected over eleven other entrants.

The bike rack designs are beautiful examples of good design being both useful and utilitarian. Particularly the bench-rack, which establishes an island of communal space between a rider’s lock-up and the flow of sidewalk traffic.

The racks were constructed in conjunction with metal fabricator Thomas Callahan of Horse Cycles
